Guang Yang is an artist currently based at Davis, California. His works center on sound while often extending beyond the purely sonic. His practice explores the intersections of diverse art forms, engaging deeply with themes of translation and identity. Recent works have drawn inspiration from the strokes of Chinese calligraphy and the layered textures of ink wash paintings, while also bridging sound with other media, such as narrative imagery and curated lighting.
Yang’s compositions have been performed by esteemed ensembles and musicians, including the Euclid String Quartet, Da Capo Chamber Players, Zhejiang Conservatory Ensemble, The Orchestra Now, Bard Conservatory Orchestra, Dogs of Desire (Albany Symphony), Transient Canvas, Sound Icon, the Rhythm Method Quartet, and the Mivos Quartet. He has collaborated with notable conductors such as Leon Botstein, Jeffrey Means, and David Alan Miller. His works have been showcased in the United States, China, and Italy at renowned venues including the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, BU Concert Hall, Arthur Zankel Music Center, Bito Conservatory Space, Xuelu Art School, Xianzhao Buddhist Temple, Yuhang Grand Theatre, Chiesa della Maddalena, Lake George Carriage House, and Bush Memorial Hall.
Yang has received commissions from organizations such as the Zhejiang Conservatory Ensemble, Yuhang Grand Theatre, The Characters, and Radio Zhejiang Choir. As an active performer, he has held four piano recitals in various venues, featuring both traditional repertoire and his own compositions.
Yang’s achievements have been recognized with numerous prizes and honors, including the Margaret Creal Shafer Prize in Composition from the Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle, the “Excellent Work” Award at the 2022 Soundways International Composition Competition, and First Prize at the Malta International Composition Competition. He is also a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honor society (Alpha Kappa Chapter). Yang studied at Bard College and Boston University under the mentorship of Lera Auerbach, George Tsontakis, Joshua Fineberg and Ketty Nez. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Composition at the University of California, Davis, under the guidance of Mika Pelo.
